TRANSITION TO YEAR 7

"I can't wait a year, I want to go now!"

These were the words of an enthusiastic Year 6 pupil at our last Open Evening — and we couldn’t agree more.

Moving to secondary school is an exciting milestone, and we are committed to ensuring every student feels supported and confident as they begin this new chapter. It’s natural to feel a little nervous as anticipation builds, but at Richmond School we turn that energy into excitement. While our school may seem large at first, its size means endless opportunities — a vibrant community offering a rich and varied programme of experiences. Students are truly spoilt for choice and are guaranteed to discover new passions and interests.

BUILDING CONFIDENCE - READY, STEADY, RICHMOND FILM

We are delighted to share our Ready, Steady, Richmond film, which follows students as they make the transition from primary school to Richmond School. From as early as Year 1, we work closely with our partner primary schools to introduce children to life at “big school.” These early links help them become familiar with our buildings, meet our teachers, and begin forming friendships with future classmates.

The film provides a window into the breadth of life at Richmond School — from our high-quality curriculum and extensive extra-curricular opportunities, to our outstanding facilities and community involvement. It also showcases our student leadership programme, exceptional careers provision, strong alumni network, and thriving Sixth Form College.

YEAR 6 TRANSITION ACTIVITIES

Our support for students moving from Year 6 into Year 7 begins with our Open Evening in early October. This event provides families with the opportunity to explore Richmond School, meet staff and students, tour our facilities, and even sample food from our restaurant.

Throughout the year, we invite primary pupils to take part in a range of sporting, science, and mathematics events hosted at our school, helping them experience our learning environment first-hand. During the summer term, Richmond School staff and students also visit local primary schools to answer questions and reassure pupils about the move to secondary school.

In June, our new students meet their tutors and have the chance to try on their uniform to ensure the perfect fit. This is followed by our two transition days in late June or early July, when students join us for a full programme of taster lessons and team-building activities. Supported by our enthusiastic student leaders, they get to know their new classmates, familiarise themselves with the site, and begin to feel part of the Richmond community. The transition experience concludes with our Year 6 Disco, a celebratory event marking the end of primary school and the start of their Richmond journey.

We hope this will give you a glimpse of the many opportunities we offer our primary students, including school visits and taking part in a range of activities to develop their confidence, forge new friendships and get to know our staff, so they feel at home when they arrive in September. Please don’t miss our Extra-curricular and Enrichment Film that features our students having fun at our packed programme of after-school activities and clubs. You can also enjoy our Drone Tour for a bird's eye tour of Richmond School and Sixth Form College.
