British Values

At Richmond School and Sixth Form College, we actively promote British Values through our School Values — Creativity, Respect, Excellence, Determination, Independence, and Teamwork — and through our LIFE programme. These values are embedded across the curriculum and underpin the development of the ‘whole child’.

We recognise that students benefit most when these values are consistently modelled by all staff and students. Every member of our school 'family' is aware that they are ambassadors for Richmond School and Sixth Form College, both within the school and college, and in the wider community. This is reinforced through staff policies and induction programmes for new employees.

HOW WE PROMOTE BRITISH VALUES

DEMOCRACY
Students experience the principles of democracy through classroom discussions, school elections, and participation in decision-making. Democracy is explored across the curriculum, including History, Religious Studies, LIFE, and assemblies, helping students understand the importance of representation and voting. This is further reinforced through our student leadership programme, where Student Council representatives are elected by their peers and work collaboratively to advocate for the student body, representing their views, ideas, and priorities.

RULE OF LAW
Students learn the importance of laws at every level — classroom, school, and national. They understand that laws exist to protect and guide, and that there are consequences when rules are broken. Our school value of Respect, together with a restorative approach to behaviour, ensures that students understand the purpose and reasoning behind rules and expectations. Through this approach, students develop the language and reflective strategies to resolve conflicts, take responsibility for their actions, and make amends. Consistent expectations and clear behaviour policies create a safe, secure environment in which students can learn, thrive, and achieve their potential.

INDIVIDUAL LIBERTY
We encourage students to become independent, responsible, and empowered citizens. Within a safe and supportive environment, they are guided to make informed choices academically and personally, understand their rights, and exercise their freedoms responsibly. Through our school value of Independence, students are supported to take ownership of their learning, reflect on their decisions, and articulate the reasoning behind their choices. A wide range of enrichment activities further enables students to explore new interests, develop their talents, and grow as confident, self-directed individuals.

MUTUAL RESPECT
Mutual respect is central to life at Richmond School and Sixth Form College. Students are encouraged to treat one another and all members of the school community with kindness, consideration, and care, fostering positive relationships and a supportive learning environment. We actively engage with our local community by hosting various groups and events, thereby strengthening our partnerships in areas such as sport, performing arts, and other community projects. These initiatives provide students with opportunities to collaborate with others, appreciate diverse perspectives, and contribute positively to the wider community.

TOLERANCE OF DIFFERENT FAITHS AND BELIEFS
At Richmond School and Sixth Form College, we celebrate the rich diversity of our school community and the wider world. We are committed to fostering an environment where students appreciate and respect the beliefs, cultures, and traditions of others. Our curriculum offers opportunities for students to explore a variety of faiths and belief systems, promoting understanding and empathy. Through Theology and Philosophy lessons, assemblies, and cross-curricular activities, students engage with different perspectives, learning to value diversity and challenge stereotypes. We also highlight cultural appreciation through Culture Days, led by our students. These events allow the whole school to explore the history, food, dance, sport, and music of different cultures, providing hands-on experiences that deepen understanding and foster respect for diversity.

By combining our school values, curriculum, enrichment activities, and community engagement, Richmond School and Sixth Form College ensures that students not only learn about British Values but also live them in their everyday school life.
